Choosing Between a Wood or Steel Ramp

Posted on May 26, 2021

Since April 2020, the price of lumber has skyrocketed, making the average price of a wooden wheelchair ramp increase as well. If you’re thinking of installing a ramp made of wood, it may be time to reconsider and choose a different material for your accessibility needs.

Although wood is a common choice when it comes to ramps, it’s not always the most practical choice. Wood must be treated and maintained regularly to prevent slipping, rotting and warping from rain and bad weather. No matter how well a wood ramp is maintained, it will eventually need to be replaced.

What is the alternative to a wood wheelchair ramp?

Steel is an excellent choice for a building material. Steel is fireproof, which means that a steel ramp can serve as a means of emergency egress. It is also much more durable than wood and will not warp out in the elements. It’s much more environmentally friendly- steel ramps are made from 100% recycled and recyclable steel. These ramps are able to be used over and over again and is less flexible and heavier than an alternative metal such as aluminum.

Consider a steel wheelchair ramp to travel in and out of your home safely and efficiently!
